Why it matters

In 2023, Generative Media was everywhere. OpenAI's DALL-E 2 and Midjourney offered images in any style a user could describe.

Stable Diffusion and open source models gave tinkerers more control, with community built tools that took storytelling in new directions. ChatGPT offered up an interactive partner for solving problems and storytelling. The initial gravity-defying stunt of automated image generation soon landed back on earth with a heavy thud. The tools were powerful enough that fears emerged over their use in replacing visual artists and storytellers.

How we did it

AIxDESIGN partnered with Sublab, the R&D of Submarine Channel - a film and animation production house, to move past the buzz and explore AI's creative potential & challenges which resulted in launching a program with three main outputs:

  • AI x Animation Report: the research culminates in a report, and learnings we'll all bring into future work.

  • The Teasers: 12 artists-in-residence went through many rounds of experimentation, ultimately resulting in the production of 6 AI animation teasers created in collaboration with each other and AI tools.

  • The Public Event Program: we hosted 4 input sessions, with new media artist talks and hands-on tinkering workshops by Erik Peters, Soyun Park, Fabian Mosele, Amritha Warrier.

What we made

The AI x Animation Report

We’ve culminated and poured the experiences, feels, experiments, tensions, questions & resolutions we encountered over the 6 months of the residency into a publication.

This is our way of synthesising and sharing the findings for others to build on, and to open up space for more critical, constructive, nuanced conversation around AI in relation to creative practice.

The Teasers

This playlist features all 6 teasers created by the pairs during the residency.

During the <STORY&CODE> residency, each duo created a 1 minute video with the use of AI.

The Public Event Program

You can also watch artist talks & workshop by invited artists & speakers Erik Peters, Soyun Park, Fabian Mosele and Amritha Warrier.
