Why it matters
Help people find their footing.
This project leads with the practical use — helping practitioners orient themselves and find collaborators. The AI x Design field had no front door. Younger practitioners couldn't tell where to start studying, what roles existed, or who to follow. Organisations couldn't easily find collaborators or spot adjacent work to their own. AIxD Cartographies provides a foundational mapping of the not-yet-defined AI x Design field and a shared language for the practices within it — a starting point for navigating the space, positioning yourself in it, and finding starting points to continue on your learning journey.
How we did it
It combines the collaborative methodology, living-document format, and unconventional publishing approach into one cohesive framing.
Led by Nadia Piet, the project combined desk research, content analysis, qualitative interviews, and participatory research with 70 contributors from 28 countries. The researchers shaped the methodology and carried out the work. Rather than producing a static PDF report, the research was published as a living Miro board, an in-flux, non-linear space where research, presentation, and community contribution could exist together. We hoped this would allow people to explore the field in ways that served them, while continuing to add their own perspectives as the landscape evolved. Alongside the map, the team also hosted four Instagram Live conversations with practitioners across AI and Design, discussing motivations, ecosystems, education, and emerging career paths. The sessions became an accessible alternative to a traditional podcast format, allowing the existing AIxD community to engage in real time without requiring specialised production or distribution infrastructure.
What we made
The primary output of the project: an interactive navigator of the AIxDesign field.
Charting people, practices, educational opportunities, and professional pathways. Built on Kumu, it was made through a combination of desk research, community workshops, and practitioner interviews.
