Let’s Have Better Conversation About AI

✿
Introduction
For the last 7 years, we've been figuring out what AI means for the rest of us. We've learned how to unpack dominant narratives of AI and reimagine our own. We've investigated what super small, local, and weird AI might look like in the hands of artists, creatives, and community organisers. But conversations about AI are still hard. Share an opinion – nuanced or not – and you're painted as an AI hype-man or a Luddite before you've worked out what you actually think. So a lot of us just stay quiet and avoid the mess. Or speak up and make more of a mess. Our hunch is that this takes certain skills – ones we're not practiced in. Learning from movements like climate justice and racial justice, we're working out how to get better at sharing an idea while it's still half-formed, in a space this emotionally charged, and talking it through so we genuinely hear other people's — and let that shape our own. That's what lets people decide how AI fits into their work, and have a real say in the cultural norms, and maybe the regulations, forming around them. So, with support from the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision, we're working with people in cultural heritage institutions to figure out how they can have better conversations about AI. We're making something like a Pocket Guide to better conversations: practical tools, games to practice with, and honest notes on what worked and what flopped. It'll all be released under CC BY 4.0, so anyone can take it, remix it, and make it their own.
